Where does Yoga originate? Yoga refers to traditional physical and mental disciplines originating in India about 3,000 years ago. Many seals and scriptures refer to Yoga positions, practice and philosophy since this period. It was always seen in the context of using the body to increase mental and spiritual ability as a way of finding balance, satisfaction and bliss. The word ‘yoga’ in Sanskrit literally means ‘union’. Many experienced practitioners called Yogis would then and today seek out remote locations away from human distractions to practise yoga. A natural setting in a forest, by a river or in the mountains has always been a preferred place for finding peace, and often these yogis would practise deep yoga and meditation completely naked in order to avoid all distractions and in complete deliverance to their mental focus.

Why do Yoga? When I look at the surroundings for the most of us, characterised by a busy urban environment where we are all trying to make more money, move around a lot, are subject to the strains and stress of modern life, creating a little bit of space in our daily existence in whatever surrounding for taking care of our soul and body surely is a very beneficial thing, something that makes us more complete.  The addition of doing your body some good, giving it strength and flexibility through the right Yogic exercises is like the cherry on the cake.

Why should you do it naked? There are many different factors that play along here. An experienced naturist may find joy in doing any activity naked, and yoga lends itself to naturism perfectly, both in practice and philosophy. For a novice, doing yoga naked allows you to focus on the movements of your body and see all the angles and positions perfectly. Doing it naked, if you are a novice at naturism, allows you to practise and look beyond your body through the mental exercises and concentration. Eventually, if you are completely relaxed and mentally focused, you forget you are naked and your ultimate realisation is that the body is just a container for a much more powerful entity, your spirit. At the most basic level, naked yoga in the right environment can be very comfortable without any hindrance of clothes. At a social level, it is also a great opportunity to meet other people with similar values.

Where can you do it? The best place to begin is perhaps your own four walls. Create a physical space where you can find calm and focus. A nice fragrance and gentle, non-rhythmic music may help you concentrate. The next step up would be to try it outdoors, where you are safe and protected from unwanted attention or hassle, maybe a nearby lake, or beach, or even your roof-top terrace or balcony (keep in mind the neighbours!).

How do you find a class? If you want to take the next step, then you can look for a group or a class in your city which offers naked yoga. Make sure that you are comfortable with the trainers. Make sure they have genuine knowledge and practice of yoga, they take care of and help the participants and help you individually with any poses, if you do it wrong. And how did I discover yoga? My introduction to yoga happened in a spectacular location in northern India, in the Himalayas. While I was working in New Delhi, I decided to go for a spa weekend in a former Maharaja’s palace. This was a great spa location where they also offered individual and group instruction in yoga in various palace and garden pavilions where wild peacocks roam freely. While the instructors were of the best quality, they do not offer naked yoga here, which was more than compensated for the serenity of the location overall. Today I went by train to Austria. It was a pleasant trip and I met some nice people. In Emmerich, just across the Dutch German border I planned to start the trip by train. Due to some work at the track the trains did not run according the schedule, so I decide to drive to Düsseldorf, to catch the train from there. Together with an other victim of Deutshe Bahn (a lady from Holland), we drove to Düsseldorf and had a nice chat about travelling around the world. From there I took the train to Radstadt and had to change in Mannheim, Munich, Salzburg and Bischoffshofen. The trip went quick due to nice accompany from other passengers. The last part was by bus, because of construction work on the track near Radstadt. This bus was fully load with screaming and giggling girls going out. Around 22:00 I reached the b&b and went for a nice sleep.

After breakfast I took my boots on and grabbed some clothes for a walk. First I head to the centre of Radstadt, where I met some music bands (Garde), to make some traditional music. This weekend was a party weekend, so lot of things to do.

After watching it for a while I decided to climb up the Roßbrand (1770m), via route 462. Since this was my first naked trip in Austria, I was a little insecure and did not know when to start naked. It was a marked track I expected a lot people (having the situation in Holland in my mind), but I was more or less alone. So I dared to took my clothes of and it felt great. I walked up higher and higher. There were some clouds but it was warm enough to be naked, because there was no wind. I went through the foggy part and finally I met the sun! In the meantime a man was climbing up and I spotted him. I got a little scared wrapped my pareo and waited a while. During the climb I passed a well with nice cold water.

After a short break I headed up to the summit. Up there I was unfortunately not alone, since half Radstadt went up for Fruhshoppen. I watched it from a distance and decided to went down via route 460. I descend to Dachbrunnsattel, where I took a steep track down to Radstadt. The end of the route was just behind my b&b. So a lovely first 5 hour naked walk in Radstadt. In the afternoon I enjoyed a schnitzel and some beers on a terrace and at night I went to the party tent to see the locals celebrating their Fest. Time to sleep.

9 August 2010
Just when I finished breakfast I was picked up by Miguel from Venezuela. Together we went to the railway station where we should meet. We were the first ones and after a while I spotted two persons behind a car packing their backpacks. The girl was waving, so I went there. These two were Anniki from Germany and her boyfriend Connor from Ireland. Both of them were the reporters joining the group. A little later Richard from the UK (living in Germany and the guy who organized the NEWT) showed up with his Border Colly Polly (including a dog rucksack). Number six was Robert from Germany and finally as number seven Brian from the UK arrived. After meeting each other we decided to depart and walked south to the start of our naked trip. Just at the lift of the golf club we took of our clothes. It was quickly done. Just Connor and Anniki were dressing (some) clothes. Since the motto is “as naked as you want” it was no problem at all. So from now we were in our walking dress and it felt comfortable. Time to talk to each other and to learn more about each other. We climbed up the hill over a kind of a rodel track, to reach the Brandalm around lunchtime.

In the meantime Connor also undressed himself totally. Just Anniki staid dressed, since she was the only lady in the group. At the Brandalm we had a lovely lunch and I connected my gas tank wrong to the stove, so I lost all my gas right than. Time to make some pictures and we continued via Brandkopf, where we had a little stop, to Vorderes Labeneck, our summit for the day at 1832 meter. Here we had a break for a while. The panorama was stunning!

All the peaks in the surroundings, up to the Dachstein, were good visible. By the way the weather was fantastic to walk naked in. On Vorderes Labeneck we decided to search for a place to stay the night. The grounds were very wet, so it was not easy to find a nice place. We passed the Eisenhofalm and the owner did not allow us to sleep on his land (since we were naked?), and we had to descend in the wrong direction. After the fence we were allowed to sleep, he say so. On our way down, we met some German, who staid in the Labeneckalm and told us about the “angry farmer”. Close to the creek we found a place to camp. Not perfect, but good enough. I placed my tent under the trees and had some dinner together. On my menu was Indonesian rice with satay. It became a little chilly and decided to put on my shirt. When the sun went down, it was time to go for a sleep. The night was warm and wet in the tent and I had the idea that I did not sleep at all.

10 August 2010
A sunny day! We woke up at around 7 AM and it was comfy enough to be naked. After having breakfast we broke up the camp and started to ascend again to the height of the farm of the “angry farmer”. On the way up, we met the German again and they invited us for a coffee and a fresh milk at the Labeneckalm. They were very open minded and did have no problem with our nudity. It was quite funny. A group of naked men on a coffee break. After making some pics, we went up to the summit of this day.

Via Hinteres Labeneck (1986 m), we reached via a steep trail the base of the Stirmskogel. I conquered a part of my vertigo, since I’m not a big fan of abysses we had to pass. I felt quite proud. From the base at 2095 meter it was only a 44 meter climb to the summit. The panorama on the 2139 meter high Stirmskogel was fantastic and we signed the book and stamped our arms.

At the base we had some rest and figured as models for clothed walkers. From here we continued to the Hakopf (1996m), where we had a great view on the Stirmskogel and saw what we had done. On the Hakopf we had an other break and decided to go to the Rauchkopfhutte, at the upper station of a ski lift coming from Zaugensee. At that time we realised that we became out of water. Once reached the Rauchkopshutte, there was no possibility to get water. Robert and I offered to go down in direction of Zaugensee to find water. We took two backpacks, all the bottles and some clothes with us to find water. Polly decided to join us. We found a hut under construction. To avoid to upset the workers we get dressed (my first pants since we left). They were friendly and supplied us with water. Since workers usually have beer, we asked them if we could buy some. We got two bottles of radler and we did not need to pay. With this cath we went up again and enjoyed the radler with the rest. In the meantime the tents were built up and I decided to set it under the terrace of the restaurant. After preparing the tents, it was time to prepare dinner. We sat in front of the hut and cooked our meal (pasta this time for me). During dinner we had an interview from Annika, which was filmed. The weather started to change and after a while it started raining cats and dogs and a big thunderstorm was crossing the ridge. We sheltered in front of the building waiting for better weather. It took about 45 minutes before we could go back to our tents. Since the terrace was built in a proper way, the tent was dry. Only the ground was wet and there was no possibility to dig a canal to remove the water. Robert decided to move his pop up tent to a pile of shelves. I decided to stay. Miguel, Anniki and Connor found an open door in the hut and decided to stay inside. After a proper look at the map it became dark and it was a good point to go to bed.

11 August 2010
Another nice day and warm enough to start it naked. There was no rain during the night and we could easily break up our camp. In the meantime Anniki interviewed us all separately and Connor took pictures. The plan was to go to the Tauernkarleitenalm for breakfast. There Anniki and Connor planned to leave the group for some nice days of relaxing. We reached the alm via Leckriedl and Stubhöhe. At the Tauernkarleitenalm we had a (dressed) fantastic breakfast with fresh cheese and bread. The kids entertained us with their accordions. Nice Alp music in a fantastic scenery. After meal it was time to say goodbye to Anniki and Connor. The rest of the group decided to go to the Südwienerhütte, where it was possible to sleep. The question was which way. Via the steep route over Bärenstaffl or via the valley. We choose the last option. In the valley Robert hide a part of his luggage in a declined hut (tent, mattress and sleeping bag). In the afternoon we reached the Südwienerhütte and booked a bed in the dormitory. Brian decided to camp. Here we had a nice lunch and some rest. At the end of the day we planned a little trip up to the house mountain, the Sprizinger (2066m), just behind the hut.

We climbed naked up the mountain and signed the book on the summit as well. Some dark clouds came over, but it stayed dry and no thunderstorm came. From there we decided to go to the neighbouring mountain Spazeck (2065m), since we were close and it was not a big climb. Once on the Spazeck we were happy that we did not cross via Bärenstaffl. The track was very steep! Back in the hut we had a nice dinner and some beers and a good sleep in the dormitory.

12 August 2010
Today we had to say goodbye to Robert. He had to back to Munich, where he had a birthday party. After breakfast he left with the owner of the hut to the valley. The rest decide to go to the Hengst (2016m) on the south side of the hut. The track was nice, but once up it became windy and a little cloudy. The panorama was fantastic and we had a great view on the Pleisingkeil. It was all above the tree line, so the wind was strong. Anyhow we stayed naked and Miguel was just wearing his gloves. For a while I also had to wear my wind stopper. During the trip it became a little warmer, so I was able to go on naked again. We had a lunch close to the Wildsee, a little lake in between the mountains. Fantastic view! From here Brian wanted to go back via the peaks and left us. Richard, Miguel and I continued our tour and came back via the Hirschwandsteig to the hut.

The steig was in the forest, so very comfy and the views over the valley and the Johannes waterfall were stunning. In the afternoon we reached the hut again. Miguel decided to leave as well and went to Salzburg that afternoon. I took al little walk in direction of the Tauern tunnel and after that we had a nice drink on the terras of the hut. Dinner that night was Bergsteigeressen and was very good. After dinner we sat outside under the clear sky and enjoyed some schnapps. In fact too many. I broke up and went to bed.

13 August 2010
The schnapps of yesterday were too many for me and I did not feel well. After breakfast I decided to go back to Radstadt and walked downhill naked. First I had the plan to walk back, but since I did not feel very well and the workers in the wood were not sure if the road on the map was still existing, I walked down to the Gnadenbrücke to take the bus to Radstadt. On the track I spotted a deer, which was looking at me, but I was too late to make a picture. Once back in Radstadt I walked to my b&b and had some rest. In the afternoon I went some souvenir shopping and had a quick snack at night. To finish the trip I had the plan to join the tour of the “Story teller”, but since it start raining I decided to go to sleep.

14 August 2010
Back home to Holland. At 8:26 AM my train left Radstadt for Munich. Here I changed trains and continued to Düsseldorf, where I found my car again for a trip back to Alkmaar, where I arrived around 8 PM.

The trip was a fantastic experience and a I’m very happy that I decided to sign up. The group was also very nice and very diverse, but with one passion, being naked. I want to thank Richard for his job and the opportunity he gives to us to make such an experience. I would say: go on and up to NEWT2011!

Over the last two years I’ve had the drive to live my life more and more naked, so I started in my own home and have also started taking holidays naked. Luckily my lovely boyfriend likes naturism, but in a more modest way. But he gives me the space. But as I told you, I was inspired to participate in more nude activities. Recently I visited one of my favourite nude beaches on the coast, Callantsoog (which is the Netherlands’ first official nude beach (1973)). I started walking and I never realized that the biggest part of the beach was occupied by naked people. This was actually the entire beach between two villages.
Because I signed up for the NEWT 2010, the Naked European Walking Tour (www.naktiv.net), in Austria, I wanted to do some exercise. The best way would be when nude.

So, I decided to do so and with full equipment I went to the coast and left my clothes in the car. Just with a pareo around my waist I walked to the beach. Although I´m not shy at all, I walked a few hundred metres in the pareo and finally took it off. It was my first time being naked on my own in a non-nude and public area. It was early in the morning, so the beach was virtually deserted. From there I walked 11 km totally nude along the beach and the few people who saw me either didn’t react or looked just a little jealous.
The experience was great. The sea, the sand, the seagulls, the dunes and of course the wind on your naked body….. Need I say more?

With this experience in mind I have thought of walking along the coast in the province where I live in North Holland. I realized that this beach, which is a 50 km (30 miles) long sandy beach, provides one with the opportunity to walk the biggest part nude. Only in the bigger and busier villages you have to wrap a pareo around your waist or wear some trousers for a few hundred metres, but I think it won’t be more than 10% of the walk.

My plan now is to do this 50 km nude hike, on my own or with others who like the idea. The entire walk will not be done in one day, but broken up. If you would like to join in, please contact me. Probably we can make an appointment.
Even in the overcrowded country of the Netherlands, you find places, where you can be at one with nature in the way Mother Nature intended.

Nude Not

I am proud to have known Thomas Lundy since the early 1990s. Not only is he a great naturist ambassador but he is also a creator of short films, often with a naturist theme.

A woman, Jodie (played by Jane Antoni), moves into a new house, only to discover her housemates are perpetually nude, or are they? A few incidents occur which could have myriad meanings: illusion, delusion, dream, prank or cosmic paradox.  Nude Not was Thomas Lundy’s first professional film. After completion, the film was sold to Canal+ television in France, where it was broadcast on the weekly show “Programme des courts” on and off for a year. That was in 2000; since then it has been screened at dozens of film festivals and other art venues, including Youtube under Thomas Lundy.

The film was shot on an Arriflex 16mm camera in black and white. It cost about $2000 to make, as Lundy lucked in by finding a seasoned cinematographer who liked his script, who then brought it sound recordists, an editor and camera assistant as crew, all for free.

The deeper meaning behind Nude Not is the relativity of reality and the subjectivity of perception. “You can’t keep your clothes on!” is a comment Lundy has often heard, as founder the University of Toronto Naturists (started in 1998, it was then the first officially approved campus co-ed nude recreation club at a Canadian University.) His reply is always “and you can’t keep your clothes off!” In this way, Nude Not is also meant to provoke thinking about artificial constructs of so-called normality. At the very essence, Nude Not is a pure expression of existentialism. Currently, Nude Not is in competition at the online film festival http://www.openfilm.com/, based in the US, called “Get it made”. The voting period for the 2nd “Get it made” competition is between 1 July and 30 September 2010. Join the Open Film site and support Thomas and the positive exposure of a nude film.

Lundy hopes to maximize exposure of his film, as this could also help him make progress on his latest project, Naked Conversations with Nude Women http://www.nakedconversationswithnudewomen.com/. Emulating goddess mythology and iconic paintings of reclining female nudes, in this new film dozens of contemporary nude women discuss a future world without men or at least a one in which women have achieved perfect equality with men in every sphere of life.

Lundy has already interviewed/filmed 17 women in Norway, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Canada and Spain, with more women to come in USA and France.

His aim this time is to produce a feature length film that beams a metaphor deep into the subconscious of woman as the giver of life. He was partially inspired by Isao Tomita’s interpretation of Gustav Holt’s Planets, in particular “Venus : The Bringer of Life” (to have a quick listen click on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OosImTf56AU), Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 A Space Odyssey and goddess art and mythology. Lundy believes there could be a gradual shift in human consciousness, breaking away from the current militaristic pyramid hierarchical economies to a more horizontal world, along the lines of ancient matriarchal societies. Lundy films all his women against a jet black backdrop (later to be filled in with stars, giving the impression the women are goddesses of the cosmos, serving as an ecstatic symbol of their procreative prowess.) Some women may appear behind iconic paintings by such luminaries as Renoir, Titian and Van Gogh, to name but three of thirty in Lundy’s collection for this work. Lundy has been working on Naked Conversations since November 2007. Finding and filming the women is very painstaking: at the last count, articles about this project have appeared in 17 Naturist magazines worldwide, which generated five of the women filmed and to-be-filmed. The remaining women were found through Lundy’s networking circles. As with Nude Not, there is no funding behind this project, but Lundy hopes when the film is eventually completed that it will be selected at an A-list film festival such as Berlinale, Venice, Cannes, Toronto or Sundance.

Walking in the Alps

It started in 2005 when Richard hiked, on his own, totally naked through the Alps from Germany to Italy. In the following years he did the same, not on his own, but with small groups. Every year they visited another part of the mountain range, and did some fantastic nude experiences. 

The 2006 walk

Various day walks are planned. None of them will be too strenuous so as to encourage lighter walkers, throughout the week. The route will be through the central European Alps, primarily using bivouacs and campsites. Carrying our sleeping quarters with us will minimize our dependency on finding available rooms en-route, although it is likely we will spend one or two nights in a convenient mountain gasthof somewhere.

Take care that you do not to bring too much stuff. You all have to carry it, but with a naked hike, the amount of clothes is reduced to a minimum. Bring always some sweaters. It can be cold during night time.

The precise route is variable depending on circumstances, including group capabilities, weather etc. 

Anyone is welcome to join for a part of a day, or for the entire walk, dressed or undressed, however their time, commitment or inclination allows. The preferred intention is to do all walks completely naked as much as possible, that’s why it is called the Naked Europe Walking Tour! Of course you have to wear something, the essential walking boots, sun hats and rucksacks. The exception to this is when going through towns and villages, when walking on tarmac and, of course, when in a gasthof or restaurant. If anyone is uncertain as to dress code, or how to join in, please do not hesitate to send me an email for clarification – I/we aim to make this easy for people. 

Please note that this is not a protest march, this is merely a walk through a fantastic chunk of our environment with less encumbarage than most people consider necessary.

The b&b can be found in the tiny village of Hylteberga, part of the community of Skurup, famous because Nils Holgerson who came from Skurup. Skurup is situated along the highway from Malmo to Ystad. The latest city is also known of the detective series of Wallander. You can feel the atmosphere from the film, but fortunately there are no crime scenes.

The climate in Skane (the province in which Hylteberga is situated), is nice and in general it is possible to be naked from May on.

Hylteberga has 4 double rooms, with their own names. Carl-Victor is the biggest one, with shower and toilet in the room. The others are Vera, Ebba and Nils. These rooms are a little smaller and the own bathrooms can be found outside the room. In this b&b that won’t be a big problem, since everybody walks around naked. The accommodation hosts two common area’s. One of them is de large kitchen, which can be used for self catering. It is well equipped. The other common area is a relax area next to the sauna. The sauna includes a huge window, who offers the sweating guest a stunning view over the fields.

Around the gard (farm), you can find a garden of 120.000 m2. In front of the house, a few terraces are available to make it easy to enjoy the sun naked. You can also make a walk around the plot in your birthday suit. Don’t be afraid to lose your way. If it happens the neighbors will not be surprised of the way you are dressed, or actually not dressed. Al know Steffen (the owner) and the way of live of his guests. By the way the Swedes are very open when it comes to nudity.

The prices of the accommodation are very reasonable and Sweden is not an expensive country anymore. The prices are comparable with The Netherlands and Germany. Just alcohol is more expensive.   

Hyltebrga Gard is a nice place for a stop of a couple of days, when exploring the country. Everybody is welcome, straight, gay, singles, couples, hairy or smooth, with or without piercings…

Naturism in Turkey

I’m sure it won’t surprise you to hear that to live nude in Turkey is to live hidden. Well…

If naturism is ill-considered by the majority of the population, it’s mostly a question of culture: although religion and politics are separated, most Turks are Muslim. Nudity is therefore not well-regarded, even judged outrageous, as much by Islam as by Catholicism. Turkish civil law condemns exhibitionism. Being naked can be considered as just that…

However, as in many topics, Turkey has some nice surprises for us. Since just this year, in fact, the Datça spit, in the south of Turkey, is home to the country’s first naturist hotel, the Golmar Adaburnu Hotel. The hotel is right on the seafront, just 15km from the town of Datça and about one hour from Marmaris.

The hotel is “sold” by tourism specialists as a naturist destination. I would say that is is more semi-naturist. Let me explain: the outdoor pool bar and terrace are naturist, but only between 8am and 8pm and guests are required to cover themselves inside the hotel.

To continue along the road of paradox, the beach in front of the hotel is a public, family beach so, unfortunately, non-naturist, even if topless bathing is authorised there. Fortunately, the hotel has its own naturist beach 20 minutes away and offers a free shuttle service. It’s a beautiful beach about 600m long with a bar, deck chairs and umbrellas plus showers and toilets.

To go there, you must book through a travel agency, like Peng Travel in the UK.

A part from this option, you can only get an all over tan in hidden coves. The website http://nudismtr.blogspot.com suggests a list of beaches and their location on the coast. The site is in Turkish and English. For those of you who speak neither, search the site with Google and click on “translate this page”.

If you want to discover the island of Cyprus, on the northern side (under Turkish control) you will also find some possibilities to offer yourself naked to the sun.  The beaches of Salamis and Karpaz have been recommended to me.

Salamis Beach is about 15 minutes from Famagouste. The beach combines both the natural beauty of this spot and the ruins of the ancient city of Salamis.

The “naturist site” on the Karpaz Peninsula, near the village of Dipkarpaz, offers you the tranquillity of a magnificent beach with golden sand and clear water. To get there, follow the road to Golden Sands Beach and turn right at the Golden Beach Bar. You will see the Nikos B&B. Follow the beach track, turn right and walk until you reach the end of the beach (about 400m). There (if it’s still there) you will see a sign saying “NUDIST PLAJI”. If you continue walking till you reach the hill, you will find a long, deserted beach, protected by huge sand dunes. You will be particularly peaceful there.

Vera Natura naturist resort

Vera Playa is a wonderful place for a relaxing naturist holiday. Located on the Costa de Almeria (Andalucia, South-East Spain), about 40 km from Almeria airport, you can easily reach it by car or by taxi. The whole area is naturist, including the street, and there are several “urbanizaciones”, i.e. resorts where you can be fully naked 24/7. There is also a hotel.

The weather is excellent, and you can usually be nude after sunset without getting cold well into September/early October. If you’re looking for a place to chill out and “recharge your batteries” in preparation for winter, this is the place for you. If you want to go out clubbing and drinking, you’re probably in the wrong place as the place gets very quiet in the evening – however if you’re willing to use your car, you can go to the nearby towns (Garrucha, Mojacar, Vera) which are fairly lively at night.

Werdinsel

Werdinsel is a nude bathing area on the lower part of the River Limmat near Zurich.

The Limmat was originally a river in a marshy floodplain. In 1896 the Werdinsel power plant was built. In subsequent decades it was changed numerous times, eventually being converted to public recreational use as we see today.

The island is now very clean and the easy access makes it popular with both young and old. Zurich naturists enjoy the river at all times of the day.

You can swim in the water but beware of the strong current. The most beautiful spots are located on the northern tip of the island.

Access by public transport: Tram #4 to Tüffenwies, 300m walk over the weir. Or bus 80/89 to Winzerhalde bus stop.

Directions by car: along the bank of the Limmat river follow Frankental (terminus Tram No. 13) or up to the monastery Fahr (along the highway). There is no parking on the Werdinsel and little parking space in the area at all.
